Static Controlled. Uptime Protected.

Seamless static-dissipative resinous floors for data centers and mission-critical facilities, installed in sections while the building stays live.

About This Application

In a data center, the floor is part of the operating environment. Static discharge puts servers, controls, and switchgear electronics at risk. A failing or unsealed slab releases dust and particulate that air handling can move through the facility. Rack placement, rolling carts, lift traffic, and maintenance work add concentrated wear.

UPS and battery rooms add another exposure: the floor system must be selected around the actual chemicals and spill response plan. At the same time, most mission-critical facilities cannot make room for a broad shutdown. Surface preparation, installation, cure, access, and grounding coordination have to fit around live operations.

Every room stays live except the one we’re working in.

The Solution

Tufco builds a seamless static-dissipative resinous floor around the facility’s ESD control plan, room use, traffic, chemical exposure, slab condition, and operating schedule. Both Tufco ESD systems measure between 1.0×106 and 1.0×109 ohms. The full system is a 3/8″ broadcast build for heavy traffic. The thin-coat system is a 1/4″ build for server halls, IT rooms, and foot traffic. The ESD control plan sets the final resistance target for each room.

  • Grounding: embedded copper grounding, connected to the facility’s verified electrical grounding system, carries charge from the conductive primer to ground.
  • Particulate control: a seamless, monolithic surface with no flooring joints to hold dust, plus an integral coved base at walls and penetrations.
  • Battery and UPS rooms: both ESD systems, top coat included, are rated Recommended for sulfuric acid up to 40%, which covers typical lead-acid electrolyte, and for potassium hydroxide and the sodium bicarbonate used to neutralize spills.
  • Traffic and loading: the full 3/8″ system is built for heavy traffic, including routes for unmanned forklifts and automated vehicles carrying sensitive electronics. It tests at 150 in-lb direct impact.
  • Occupied buildings: Tufco’s epoxy coats are odorless and the ESD top coat is low-odor, which limits odor in air handlers serving occupied space.
  • Phased execution: night and weekend mobilizations keep unaffected areas live while work advances room by room. Each coat is walkable in about 2 hours, and the full system takes foot traffic 6 hours after the final coat and heavy traffic at 12.

The floor supports an ESD control program built to ANSI/ESD S20.20-2021. S20.20 certifies the facility’s program, and the floor is one component of it. Tufco’s published resistance values were measured to ASTM F150 at 500 V over concrete, and Tufco tests resistance on site after completion, using the method the project specification names.

Proven in Adjacent Environments

Tufco crews have installed and tested ESD floors in pharmaceutical, semiconductor, research and oil production facilities. The other jobs below cover the rest of what a data center floor has to handle: acid exposure, cleanable seamless surfaces, equipment rooms, and work done while the facility kept running.

STATIC CONTROL
Tufco ESD floors in service

REQUIREMENT
Static control at the floor in rooms where electronics, components and product have to be protected from discharge.

DELIVERED
Tufco ESD systems in pharmaceutical component manufacturing, semiconductor manufacturing and assembly, chemical research laboratories, and oil production facilities. Tufco tests resistance after every installation.

WHY IT APPLIES
It is the same floor system offered on this page, installed and tested by the same crews.

FOOD & BEVERAGE
Vinegar production facility, Western New York

REQUIREMENT
Decades of acetic acid had destroyed the brick floor and corroded the cast iron drains through. The plant could not stop production for the rebuild.

DELIVERED
10,000 sq ft of Tufcrete urethane with a chemical-resistant epoxy topcoat, integral cove at every tank and wall, and 350 LF of stainless slot drains. The work ran in four 4-day mobilizations with zero lost production days.

WHY IT APPLIES
A lead-acid battery room puts acid on the floor, and a data center can’t take a building-wide outage for flooring work. This job dealt with both.

PHARMACEUTICAL
Manufacturing expansion, Batesville, Arkansas

REQUIREMENT
12,544 sq ft of seamless floor for a GMP production area that is cleaned constantly and crossed by forklifts.

DELIVERED
MRXL Epoxy Floor System over the full area, start to finish in 6 days.

WHY IT APPLIES
A server hall asks for the same thing: a sealed, jointless surface that stays intact under rolling loads and repeated cleaning.

MECHANICAL ROOM
Poultry plant engine room, Ozark, Arkansas

REQUIREMENT
The painted concrete floor in the engine room was chipping apart around running equipment.

DELIVERED
4,320 sq ft of MRXL Epoxy with an impervious, slip-resistant finish, completed in 3 days.

WHY IT APPLIES
Switchgear, UPS and mechanical rooms work on the same terms. The equipment stays on, and loose coating can’t be left on the floor around it.

Chemical ratings come from the Tufco Epoxy Chemical Resistance Chart (rev. July 2017) and apply to the ESD top coat as well. Concentration, temperature, and contact time all affect the result, and the full chart is available on request.

Standards basis: ANSI/ESD S20.20-2021 sets requirements for an ESD control program. ASTM F150 and ANSI/ESD STM7.1 are test methods for the electrical resistance of floor materials. The project specification defines the required range, test method, grounding layout, and acceptance criteria.
